The grit of the file determines the level of polishing of the emery. The smaller the number, the harder and therefore more abrasive the file. Conversely, the larger the number, the softer and therefore less abrasive the file.

For artificial nails, files with coarser grits are recommended, while for natural nails, softer files are preferred.

• 80-100: very hard grits
• 120-150: hard grits
• 180-240: medium grits
• 400: soft grits
• 600: very soft grits
