The first relationship between Aristotle and Alexander is that the former was teaching and the latter was learning. Their second relationship is that Alexander conquered a large part of the world for three hundred years, while Aristotle explored a vast realm of the mind for eighteen centuries.
Their third relationship refers to the price. The amortization was proportional to the charge. Politics paid for Alexander's conquest with the annihilation of ancient Greece. The spirit fulfilled Aristotle's achievement with the demise of classical philosophy.
The chain that was broken with Aristotle's Physics as its last link was reconnected with Newton's Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica as its first link. In the lengthy intervening period, philosophy donned grey attire. It wore soiled tunics, robes, shaggy garments, and veils. It became a maidservant, a handmaiden, a breeze, and a sacristan, but never again a churchgoer. Ancilla theologiae, as they formally called it. A slave of theology, that is. And it secluded itself in monasteries alone. Locked away in cells, huts, and closed cellars.
