The Escapist or After the Disappearance of Albertine (Proust did not have time to choose the final title) presents us with the end of the Albertine cycle: her escape, her death, the sorrow, and the oblivion.
The confinement in the home of the Captive ends: yet without a return to calmness and optimism, while nostalgia becomes more intense with searches, with posthumous interrogations, and with events that compete with each other in surprises.
The author and the hero continue to explore possible worlds, as they are particularly drawn to those that are contrary to ordinary experience. We thus see the general change beginning that sweeps through the entire end of the Search and simultaneously reveals the role of time and the instability of the self and of situations.
