Henri Bergson (1859-1941), a member of the French Academy and a Nobel Prize winner, is today, along with the Philosophy of Life he developed, more relevant than ever.
The reason for this, according to Romanos, must be sought in the categories of alienation of the modern era: the ever-increasing oppression of the inner nature of humanity, which is accompanied by the rationalized power over the external nature, the autonomy of the forces of technology to a degree that is dangerous for the human species, the triumph of the subject-object relation, of the abstract process, of the quantification of fragmentation, of quality over quantity, etc. as values of Western civilization.
In contrast to the above, the qualities of Bergsonian thought are presented: First, Bergson, with his doctrine of intuition and sympathy that approaches the phenomena of the external world through the familiar psychic center, is a philosopher of direct experience.
Secondly, he developed, through detailed studies of biological evolution, the functioning of instinct and intellect in the structuring of living organisms, the fundamental principles of a philosophy of organic becoming.
Third, his teaching about the primordial potential for a creative elevation of the inner human being and a more spiritual, free human society within the embrace of nature contains the answer to the question about the meaning of life.
Romanos explores within the “open system” of Bergsonian philosophy particularly the concepts of intuition, sympathy, and life. He defines intuition as an advanced synthesis of instinct and intellect, as the center of a new aesthetic anthropology.
Furthermore, he investigates, with the help of the biophilosophical tradition - a detailed discussion of the positions of Bergson and Max Scheler as well as the Stoics - the notion of sympathy as a source of the idea of humanism.
Finally, he contrasts two philosophical traditions to the benefit of the concept of life: the rationalist, against an “Aesthetic Humanism,” which - from Friedrich Schiller to Herbert Marcuse - preserves remnants of repressed sensibility.
