Minor cuts or scratches
The best way to stop bleeding is to apply pressure with a clean towel or gauze to the wound for five to ten minutes without interruption. Once the bleeding stops, carefully wash the wound with soap and water. This way, you reduce the risk of infection and remove black specks of dirt that may be trapped in the skin.
Stitches
A wound requires stitches when:
- The wound is very open and continues to bleed despite applying pressure for more than 5 minutes.
- The wound is sufficiently deep.
- There are foreign objects in the wound that may cause infection.
- Blood is spurting out forcefully. In this case, a vein may be injured, and immediate stitches are needed to properly nourish and stop the bleeding.
- The injury is to the face or neck.
When stitches should be done
In most cases, they should be done within 24 hours. Some wounds need to be closed sooner; however, it is safe to wait at least 8 hours before closing the wound. If you decide to wait, you should wash the wound under running water and remove any possible impurities. Do not let the wound dry out. Moisten a gauze and place it over the wound, changing it every two hours to keep it moist.
