Port is a Portuguese fortified wine (liqueur wine 15-22% abv with most between 20-22%) produced by adding alcohol before fermentation is complete to stop it. For this reason, all Ports contain unfermented sugars.
Port is made from local grape varieties grown and vinified within the demarcated area along the Douro River. Vineyards are planted on terraces in the schist rock on the steep slopes of the hills.
It is named after the port of the city of Porto, the second-largest city in Portugal, which lies at the mouth of the Douro River and served as the trading point for the product both internally and mainly in foreign markets.
The grape varieties used are around 100, with the most important being Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Baroca, and Tinta Cao.
Taylor’s Port Wine was founded in 1692 and is one of the oldest and most renowned in the production of port wines with large stocks of rare port wines. Today, the name Taylor’s stands as a mark of quality and consistency.
