The game of the world is played through the great powers that connect man with the world – myths and religion, poetry and art, politics, philosophy, sciences, and techniques – which are mobilized by the elemental forces: language and thought, labor and struggle, love and death, as well as by the play of man who is a player, a game, and the mocked.
The game "is" the play of being in the becoming of the fragmented and disintegrated wholeness of the multidimensional and open world. It unfolds as God-problem, cosmic world, man within the world, world history, being-nothing, totality-nothing, world-nonworld.
The game of the world – as a horizon without foundation – includes and surpasses every game within the world, crushes and embraces all games and all rules, all transgressions and all calculations, all meanings and all interpretations, all truths – triumphant forms of wandering.
Game of time, it tolerates all mass or partial readings offered for it, even those that obscure it, and renders all names revolutionary. To be said, "this" seems to require a questioning and planetary thought, an encyclopedic and simultaneously definitive language, a systematic and fragmentary writing.
The game of the world, a major work of Kostas Axelos, was first published in France by Éditions de Minuit (1969, 1994) and was reissued in January 2018, by Éditions Les Belles Lettres, marine ink collection. Along with the books Contribution to Logic (1977, untranslated in Greek) and Towards Planetary Thought (1964, 1972) Greek translation by the Hestia Bookstore Editions (1985), it is included in the trilogy The Unfolding of the Game.
Kostas Axelos was born on June 26, 1924, in Athens. Alongside his Greek secondary education, he attended classes at the French Institute of Athens and the German School. During the German-Italian occupation, he actively participated in the Resistance and subsequently in the December events, as an organizer, journalist, and theorist of the communist movement (1941-1945).
Later, he was expelled from the ranks of the Communist Party of Greece and was sentenced in absentia to death by a military court. He settled in Paris at the end of 1945. He studied philosophy at the Sorbonne, where he defended his two doctoral theses (Marx as a Thinker of Technique and Heraclitus and Philosophy) and taught from 1962 to 1973.
Editor-in-chief of the renowned theoretical journal Arguments (1956-1962), he founded and directed the eponymous series at Éditions de Minuit, where most of his works were published. He published a series of books (initially in Greek and subsequently primarily in French, but also in German) that have been translated into sixteen languages. The present book, The Game of the World, was published in France in 1969 and is being released for the first time in Greece.
Kostas Axelos passed away in Paris on February 4, 2010.
