The philosophical reflection of Plato was at the center of the pursuits of Russian scholars and researchers of the colossal phenomenon of the Russian Philosophical and Theological Renaissance at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
One of the key figures in this creative movement was Sergei Trubetskoy, a student and friend of the founder of Russian religious philosophy, Vladimir Solovyov, who continued his work and bequeathed us significant texts.
Among these are the two essays published in this volume: Plato's Protagoras and The Foundations of Idealism, in which the Russian philosopher and first democratically elected rector of Moscow University develops his own approach to the complex and multi-layered philosophical heritage of the Greek founder of idealism.
In the first essay, the Russian philosopher deals with Plato's dialogue Protagoras, in connection with the evolution of the Greek thinker's ideas about ethics. In the second essay, he develops his own approach to the foundations of idealism in contrast to German classical philosophy, while advocating for the ancient, classical view of idealism as a fundamental current of philosophical heritage.
The translation from Russian is by Dimitris V. Triantafyllidis as well as the introduction, while the postscript is signed by Dimitris Baltas.
