At the end of the 19th century, Friedrich Nietzsche made the astonishing proclamation that the fundamental values that had supported the edifice of European civilization for centuries have been "devalued." This was not a literary flourish, but a conviction supported by impressive arguments in a series of books by this author.
Primarily, Nietzsche worked through three fundamental values: truth, morality, and God. [...] The theory that summarized Nietzschean intervention was characterized by the creator himself as Nihilism.
During World War II, another German thinker, Martin Heidegger, engaged in a long confrontation with Nietzschean thought. This focused on several key Nietzschean ideas, with the "devaluation of values" occupying a primary position. Heidegger "takes seriously" Nietzsche's preaching and attempts some decisive breaks.
Thus, in 1950, he published the main achievements of his confrontation with Nietzschean thought in a text titled: Nietzsche's proclamation "God is dead." Professor Giannis Javaris attempts here, on one hand, to present - in translation and equipped with commentary - the relevant text by Heidegger, and on the other hand, to expose the problematic of the devaluation of values as it emerged from discussions around the proposed Overman and the declared "death of God."
