Description

Port or Porto is one of the most well-known dessert wines that put Portugal on the world wine map. It is among the oldest appellations in the world (1756) and owes its name to the port from which it is traded.

The grape-growing areas entitled to the Port or Porto appellation are located inland, about 70 km from the port and towards the Spanish border. The entire cultivation area is formed into terraces at equal altitudes.

The addition of alcohol is the essential step to stopping alcoholic fermentation and preserving the unfermented sugars. In the case of Port, the alcohol added is the local distillate aguardiente. The sweet wine produced has an alcohol content that reaches 19%-20% vol.

Port Single Quinta Vintage comes only from a single vineyard plot and is bottled in the best year, after at least three years of aging in barrels or tanks. The winemaker decides its further fate, whether it deserves to be bottled or not. Subsequently, the Wine Institute determines whether the wine qualifies for the vintage title. A vintage can be aged for over 50 years.
