The purpose of this book is to bring Plato, the man and his works, closer to the reader, and this with the utmost completeness, but nothing else.
It would like to make others love him as I do, to become what he was for countless people since he lived, but which in our days, especially among us Germans, is for very few.
Therefore, I address not only my esteemed colleagues with the appropriate consideration, but I want others to become acquainted with his works and to give their best self in their study.
That some knowledge on their part is more or less assumed, may sometimes be annoying, but it could not be avoided. Plato wanted to be a philosopher, and those who studied with him he wanted to make philosophers, but with the original meaning of the word as it was later shaped by Socrates.
They must study and never tire of loving and seeking the knowledge that is necessary to be able to act correctly according to it, and thus to have a good life - two concepts for which the ancient Greeks used the same word - or, to put it in a more Greek way, to reach the state of happiness, the peace of the soul, an inner happiness that can coexist with what people usually call unhappiness, something that Plato himself exemplarily experienced.
