Description

Port or Porto is one of the most famous dessert wines that brought Portugal into prominence and placed it on the global wine map. It is among the oldest appellations of origin in the world (1756) and takes its name not from the area where it is produced, but from the port from which it is traded.

The grape-growing regions entitled to the appellation Port or Porto are located inland, about 70 km from the port and towards the Spanish border. The entire cultivation area that extends above the river is shaped into terrace levels.

As with all vins de liqueur, the addition of alcohol is the necessary step to stop alcoholic fermentation and preserve the unfermented sugars. In the case of Port, the alcohol added is the local distillate aguardiente. The sweet wine produced has an alcohol content that reaches 19%-20% vol, and its quality is determined by the correct timing of the distillate addition.

Port Single Quinta Vintage comes only from one vineyard plot and is bottled in the best year, after at least three years of aging in barrels or tanks. It is the winemaker who decides its further fate, whether it deserves to be in the bottle or not. Then, the Wine Institute determines if the wine is entitled to the vintage title.

A vintage can age for more than 50 years.
