Port is a Portuguese fortified wine (liqueur wine 15-22% abv with most between 20-22%) that is produced by adding alcohol before the fermentation is completed. All Ports contain unfermented sugars. It is made from grapes of local varieties that are grown and vinified in the demarcated region along the Douro River.
The vineyards are planted on terraces in the schist rock on the steep slopes of the hills. It took its name from the port city of Porto. The grape varieties used are around 100, with the main ones being:
- Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo)
- Touriga Nacional
- Touriga Franca
- Tinta Baroca
- Tinta Cao
The wines used for the production of Fonseca LBV come from a reserve of some of the best full-bodied red wines of 2012, which are aged in large wooden vats with a capacity of 27,500 liters and then bottled after five years.
