If Vizyinos transcends the flat ethnography of his time towards the direction of psychological analysis, Alexandros Papadiamantis (1851-1911) soars towards the heights of poetry.
His humble heroes and their usually trivial stories acquire a shimmer and a charm. The "looseness" of the architectural structure of his short stories, as well as his linguistic "disorder" - purist in the descriptions, idiomatic local dialect in the dialogues - not only constitute part of the secret of the magic and allure of his prose but also represent preemptive elements of a modern, as subsequent developments have shown, conception of the short story.
