The general conclusion of the book is that nihilism has now penetrated the level of institutions and has settled into the core of the subject, where it disrupts from within the individualized personality, transforming it into amorphous sludge.
In place of the once powerful "Promethean" will to power, which characterized the modern person at the ascending side of their evolutionary curve, there remains an anxious internal search for new, ever newer, pleasurable forms of self-analysis of desire. It is a hedonistic self-nihilism.
"At one extreme, it is a kind of gluttony, an insatiable demand for more and more. At the other extreme, it is a blend of abandonment, resignation, cowardice in the face of misery and death." Nihilism thus transforms into a pandemic psychopathy in the modern world. It is a social disease.
A disease of culture, which cannot be addressed institutionally. Its cure no longer depends on changing institutions but on changing souls: on a metaphysical revolution / conversion.
