Description & Specifications

The only son of Skevos is on one of the ships, the "sporkas," that are undergoing quarantine on the small island of Tsugria, opposite Skiathos. It is the great cholera epidemic of 1865 (and Papadiamantis, who was then fourteen years old, surely remembered the details vividly). To see and care for her child, who has been afflicted by the illness, she manages, dressed as a man, to get hired as a "vardian" on the ships and achieve her goal. With this simple premise, however, Papadiamantis manages to provide us with a rich tableau of variety, contrasts, and episodes.
