Nikos K. Moutsopoulos

Emeritus Professor of the Department of Architecture at the Faculty of Engineering of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Nikolaos Moutsopoulos, son of Konstantinos, was born in 1927 in Athens. He studied Architecture at the National Technical University of Athens and pursued further education in France. He received his Ph.D. from the School of Architecture at NTUA. He was a graduate of the Faculty of Theology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where he was appointed to teach Christian Archaeology and Art. In 1958, he was elected as a full professor in the Chair of Architectural Morphology at the Department of Architecture at the Faculty of Engineering of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He specialized in Byzantine and post-Byzantine ecclesiastical architecture and the study of Byzantine and traditional housing and art. He authored related studies and organized and participated in numerous international and local scientific conferences. He conducted excavations at various locations in Greece. He focused on the study and documentation of fortified settlements and castles in Northern Greece and on issues of comparative morphology. He developed the architectural study for the Patriarchal Institute of Patristic Studies at the Holy Monastery of Vlatadon in Thessaloniki and the katholikon and synodical of the Holy Retreat of Saint John the Theologian in Souroti. He served as president of international and national scientific councils. He worked as the head of the restoration of the Holy Sepulchre. He was a corresponding member of the Academy of Athens, the Pontaniana Academy of Naples, and the Academy of Sciences of Bulgaria, as well as an honorary Doctor of Sofia University. He passed away on March 14, 2019, at the age of 92.
