Apostolos Polyzoidis

Apostolos Polyzoidis was born in Alexandria to Greek parents. He graduated from the English school Victoria College, studied medicine, and pursued further training in England. As a certified member of the Royal College of Surgeons and Orthopaedics in London, he worked in England for a total of thirty-five years, twenty-three of which he served as the Director of Orthopaedics at a university hospital. When young Polyzoidis walked along the beach, the city center, and the alleys of Alexandria, he found it inexplicable that nothing remained of the ancient Greek city with the Lighthouse, the seventh wonder of the ancient world, the Mausoleum of Alexander the Great, the Library, the Museum, and the palaces of the Ptolemies who lived from the 4th to the 1st century BC. In the 1950s, he had the misfortune of witnessing the decline of the Greek community in Alexandria. From his youth, influenced by the transformation of Alexandrian history, he contemplated writing a book, a project he eventually realized after relocating with his family to the heart of the Aegean, on the island of Paros.
