
Thomas S. Bateman
Thomas S. Bateman is a professor and program coordinator in the field of management at the McIntire School of Commerce, University of Virginia. He teaches Leadership and directs a new undergraduate program focused on Leadership, which is open to undergraduate students of all majors. Before joining the University of Virginia, he taught organizational behavior at the Kenan-Flagler Business School, University of North Carolina, to undergraduate students, MBA students, doctoral candidates, and business executives. He also taught for two years as a visiting professor in Europe at the Institute of Management Development (IMD), one of the world-renowned centers for designing and implementing educational programs for aspiring business executives. Professor Bateman completed his doctoral dissertation in business administration at Indiana University in 1980. Earlier, he earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Miami. In addition to Virginia, UNC-Chapel Hill, and IMD, Dr. Bateman has taught at Texas A&M University and the Universities of Tulane and Indiana.
Professor Bateman is an active researcher in the field of management, an author, and a business consultant. He has served on the editorial board of the most prestigious academic journals and has presented numerous articles at professional meetings on topics such as managerial decision-making, work stress, negotiation, employee commitments and motivations, group decision-making, and job satisfaction. His articles have been featured in scientific journals including the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Journal of Applied Psychology, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Journal of Management, Business Horizons, Journal of Organizational Behavior, and Decision Sciences.
Dr. Bateman's business consulting and research centers around in-depth knowledge of business practices by executives from various companies, management concerning problem-solving at every organizational level, different types of proactive behavior by employees at all levels, and the successful pursuit of long-term goals. He has collaborated with numerous companies, including Nokia, Singapore Airlines, Bankers Association, and the US Chamber of Commerce.
