
Nikos Mpelavilas
Nikos Belavilas was born in Piraeus in 1959. He studied architecture and completed his doctoral dissertation at the School of Architecture of the National Technical University of Athens, where he has been teaching since 2003, currently as an Assistant Professor. He has also taught at the University of Thessaly and the Ionian University.
He directed the Lavrio Office of NTUA for the creation of the Technological-Cultural Park and the Industrial Museum of Ermoupolis. As a member of the Urban Environment Laboratory at NTUA, he participated in the design of the Metropolitan Park in Goudi, the Elefsina waterfront, the Technical University in Limassol, the tram extensions in Athens and Piraeus, among others. He led the study for the building of the new Greek Film Archive on Iera Odos, as well as NTUA's research on the Historical Mines in the Aegean, the Register of Greek Industrial Heritage, the historical center of Preveza, and the Metropolitan Park of Elliniko. He is a member of the International Committee for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage - TICCIH, the International Council on Monuments and Sites - ICOMOS, and since 2007, a scientific evaluator for the UNESCO World Heritage List.
He has authored the books "Ports and Settlements in the Aegean of Piracy" and "Places of People - Comments on Space and Politics." He contributed articles to collective volumes such as "Aegean: Dispersed City" at the 10th Venice Architecture Biennale 2006, "Athens-Absolute Realism" at the 8th Venice Architecture Biennale 2002, "Greece of the Sea," "Historical Industrial Equipment in Greece," "The Greek Landscape," "The Aegean Sea. Cartography and History, 15th - 17th Century," "Mines in the Aegean 19th-20th Century," "Contemporary Greek Landscapes," among others.
