Georgios I. Kitsopanidis

Professor G. Kitsopanidis was born in Lamia in 1925 and graduated from Lamia High School in 1943. He was admitted to the School of Agriculture and Forestry at the University of Thessaloniki through entrance exams in the same year and obtained his degree in Agriculture in 1950 with the highest distinction, after completing his military service in the interim. In 1951, he was appointed as an Assistant and in 1954 as a Curator at the Laboratory of Agricultural Economics and Policy at the same university. In 1956, he earned his Ph.D. in Agricultural Sciences with the highest distinction, and in 1959, he was unanimously elected as a Lecturer in Agricultural Economics and Policy. Meanwhile, in 1957, he received his degree in Economics and Political Sciences from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki with high honors. Between 1961 and 1963, he pursued postdoctoral studies and research at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. In 1966, he was elected as an Associate Professor and in 1969 as a Full Professor of Agricultural Economic Research, a position he held until 1993, when he retired due to age limits. During the academic year 1982-83, he served as the Dean of the School of Agriculture, and in 1986-87, he was a visiting professor at the University of Florida, USA. In 1993, he was awarded the title of Emeritus Professor by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. In 2007, he was elected a regular member of the Hellenic Agricultural Academy and was awarded by the Academy of Athens for his scientific work "Economic Animal Production - Principles, Applications, and Techno-economic Analysis." Concurrently, he was actively involved in a wide range of scientific, administrative, and social activities both within and outside the university, as detailed in his work "60 Years (1951-2011) of Educational and Research Activity in the Field of Greek Agricultural Economics." In 2012, he published the specialized and unique Greek agro-economic dictionary titled "Codification of the Internationally Used Agro-economic Terminology" with over 2,500 entries, and in 2018, he released the current scientific work titled "Basic Axes and Mechanisms of Restructuring and Modernization of Greek Agriculture as a Basis for Improving its Competitiveness and Revitalizing Rural Areas," which is hoped to initiate a serious study on the issue of "Reconstruction of Greek Agriculture." As evidenced by the 154 published papers and 8 published books to date, the aforementioned professor continues to systematically engage with the techno-economic problems of our agriculture, even though 24 years have passed since his retirement due to age limits.
