Herbert Marcuse

Herbert Marcuse, a German philosopher and sociologist, was born in 1898 in Berlin. He studied at the Universities of Berlin and Freiburg. He collaborated with the Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt until 1933 and was a member of the Frankfurt School. Marcuse emigrated to the United States, where he taught at Columbia, Harvard, Brandeis, and the University of California. His philosophical views were influenced by Hegel, Freud, Heidegger, and Marxist theory. He sought to combine Marxism and Freudianism. Marcuse had a profound impact on the student movement of the 1960s. His most significant works include "One-Dimensional Man," "Eros and Civilization," and "Reason and Revolution." He passed away in the United States in 1979.
