H. Tristram Engelhardt

Herman-Tristram Engelhardt (b. 1941) is an emeritus professor of philosophy and the philosophy of medicine at Rice University and Baylor College. He frequently travels worldwide as a visiting professor at numerous universities. He is one of the foremost bioethicists in the United States. Engelhardt is the editor of two leading journals in the fields of philosophy of medicine and bioethics, "The Journal of Medicine and Philosophy" and "Christian Bioethics." He is also an editor for the book series "Philosophical Studies in Contemporary Culture." He has authored over 500 articles, along with numerous book reviews and other publications. More than 200 of his works have been reprinted or translated. In 1991, he converted from Roman Catholicism to Orthodoxy, adopting the name Herman in honor of Saint Herman of Alaska. Through his lectures around the globe, he provides a genuine and vibrant Orthodox testimony regarding the historical and spiritual value of Orthodoxy. For the past three years, he has been battling cancer.
