Walter Kranz

Walter Kranz, a German philologist, was born in November 1884 and passed away in September 1960. He studied classical philology in Göttingen and Berlin, where he earned his doctorate. He fought in World War I, was wounded, and received military honors. As a professor of ancient languages at the University of Halle, he was later (in 1937) stripped of his right to teach due to his wife's Jewish heritage and was placed on leave. He taught at universities in Turkey before returning to Germany in 1950, where he joined the University of Bonn. Kranz authored numerous philological works, studies, and articles, and is particularly renowned for his contribution to the publication of Hermann Diels' "Die Fragmente der Vorsokratiker" (The Fragments of the Presocratics).
