Eygenios A. Giarenis

Eugenios Yarenis is a military judge, born in Athens in 1968. He studied at the Faculty of Law of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and holds a Ph.D. from the Department of Public Administration at Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences. He joined the Judicial Corps of the Armed Forces following a competitive examination in 1994. He holds the rank of Military Judge B', equivalent to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Armed Forces and the rank of Appellate Judge in regular justice. He is a founding member of the Association of Judicial Officers of the Armed Forces Judicial Corps. Since military justice is common to all three branches (Army, Navy, and Air Force) of the Armed Forces and does not separate the judicial from the prosecutorial branch, he has served in various positions: as Assistant Judicial Advisor at the Judicial Office of the Hellenic Navy General Staff (until 1995), as Deputy Prosecutor at the Naval Court of Piraeus (until 1997), as Judge at the Military Court of Athens (until 2001), as Investigator at the Military Court of Athens (until 2006), as Judge at the Air Force Court of Athens (until 2008), as Deputy Prosecutor at the Military Court of Ioannina (until 2011), and as Presiding Judge at the Military Court of Athens (a position he holds to this day). He has taught Military Criminal Law at the Hellenic Army Academy from 2000 to 2002, and courses on "Military Penal Code - Preliminary Inquiries" and "Law of War" at the Health Application School (401 General Military Hospital of Athens) from 2003 to 2006. In 2006, he was appointed regular professor of "Elements of Military Criminal Legislation" at the Police Academy (School of Officers of the Hellenic Police), where he authored an educational aid, published by the Hellenic Police Printing Office, for first-year Cadet Officers of the School. He has published monographs and over 40 studies and articles in legal and military journals, related to Military Criminal Law, the Law of War, and ancient Greek history in relation to the examination of the phenomenon of war. His works include "Notes on Military Criminal Law" (2002) published by P.N. Sakkoulas, "Military Penal Code: Theory and Application" (2005) by Nomiki Bibliothiki, "Military Criminal Law in its International Reflections - Twelve Studies" (2008) by A.N. Sakkoulas, and "Law of War and Military Criminal Law - Modern and Ancient Greek Approaches" (2009) by Nomiki Bibliothiki. Above all, he finds the greatest joy in reading, painting, and playing music with his two daughters, Myrto and Marina.
