John Gray

John Gray is a political philosopher and Emeritus Professor of European Thought at the London School of Economics. Initially a liberal thinker aligned with Thatcherism and a former advisor to Margaret Thatcher's government in the UK, he has evolved in recent years into a systematic critic of capitalism and globalization. His works include: "Mill on Liberty: A Defence" (1983), "Hayek on Liberty" (1984), "Liberalism" (1986), "Enlightenment's Wake: Politics and Culture at the Close of the Modern Age" (1995), "Isaiah Berlin" (1996), "False Dawn: The Delusions of Global Capitalism" (1998), "The Two Faces of Liberalism" (2000), "Straw Dogs: Thoughts on Humans and Other Animals" (2002), and "Al Qaeda and What it Means to be Modern" (2003). He is a regular contributor to publications such as the Guardian, New Statesman, Resurgence, TLS, and the New York Times Book Review. His articles have been compiled in anthologies including "Liberalisms: Essays in Political Philosophy" (1989), "Post-Liberalism: Studies in Political Thought" (1993), "Beyond the New Right: Markets, Government, and the Common Environment" (1993), "After Social Democracy: Politics, Capitalism and the Common Life" (1996), and "Endgames: Questions in Late Modern Political Thought" (1997).
