Michalis Modinos

Michalis Modinos, an environmentalist, geographer, and engineer, was born in Athens in 1950. A theorist and activist of the ecological movement, he collaborated with international organizations, taught at academic institutions worldwide, and was the founder and publisher of the magazine "New Ecology." He also served as the president of the National Center for the Environment and director of the Interdisciplinary Institute of Environmental Research. His essayistic and research work includes the books "Myths of Development in the Tropics" (Stochastis), "From Eden to Purgatory" (Exantas), "Topographies" (Stochastis), "The Game of Development" (Trochalia), and "The Archaeology of Development" (University of Crete Press). Since 2005, he has systematically turned to literature and its critique, publishing novels such as "Golden Coast" (2005), "The Great Abai" (2007), "Return" (2009, Petros Haris Foundation Award of the Academy of Athens), "The Raft" (2011, distinction by the State Awards Committee and nominee for the European Literary Award), "Wild West" (2013), "Last Exit: Stymphalia" (2014), "Equatoria" (2016, State Novel Award, 2017), and "The Grid" (2018). As a literary critic, he collaborates with the "Bibliodromio" supplement of the newspaper "Ta Nea." He is a member of the Society of Authors.
