
Dimitrios A. Stamatopoulos
Dimitris Stamatopoulos is a Professor of Balkan and Late Ottoman History at the Department of Balkan, Slavic, and Oriental Studies at the University of Macedonia. He was born in Terpni, Serres, in 1969. He graduated (1991) and earned his Ph.D. (1998) from the Department of History and Archaeology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. In 2001, he was a visiting fellow at the Program in Hellenic Studies at Princeton University (USA). During the academic year 2004-2005, he received a scholarship from the Bulgarian State to conduct research in the archives of the cities of Sofia and Veliko Tarnovo as part of the "Church and Family in the Balkans" program. He was a member of the School of Historical Studies at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (2010-11) and the Institute for Advanced Studies at the University of Freiburg (2017-18), and a visiting professor at the Universities of Princeton, Mainz, Sofia, Cyprus, and the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales. His broader interests include the relationship between religion and politics, particularly the emergence of civil society in the Balkans, with a focus on the late Ottoman period. He is the author of numerous articles and books centered on the Ottoman Balkans.
