
Maria - CHristina CHatziioannou
Maria Christina Chatziioannou holds a Ph.D. in History and is the Director of Research in the field of Economic and Social History at the Institute of Historical Research of the National Hellenic Research Foundation. She studied at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (Department of History and Archaeology) and at La Sapienza University in Rome (Scuola di Perfezionamento di Storia Medioevale e Moderna). She has published studies and edited works that fall within the scope of Modern Social and Economic History (18th-20th centuries). Her main research focuses include the comparative study of commercial activity, the relationship between markets and local merchants, economic migration, entrepreneurship as a factor of survival and growth for commercial enterprises, and the exploration of interpretative frameworks in modern Greek historiography related to commerce. She has participated in research projects concerning settlements and the local history of geographical areas such as Western Macedonia. Her other studies address Italian history and historiography within the context of the political, economic, and cultural relations developed in the Mediterranean.
