Eratosthenis G. Kapsomenos

Eratosthenis G. Kapsomenos, from Chania, Crete, is a Professor of Modern Greek Philology and Literary Theory in the Department of Philology at the University of Ioannina (since 1983) and Dean of the School of Philosophy. He holds a degree and a doctorate from the University of Thessaloniki, with postgraduate studies in Paris [Aesthetics - Theory of Art and Culture: Université de Paris-Sorbonne (Paris I), Stylistics - Semiotics of Literature: Université de Paris VII and École des Hautes Études]. His research efforts have focused on the fields of Literary Theory and Interpretation. He was one of the pioneers in Greece of Structural Theory and Semiotics (Narratology - Poetics - Sociosemiotics), as well as Statistical Stylistics. Over the past decade, his research interest has shifted towards Cultural Theory and the analysis of cultural phenomena. At the invitation of respective academic institutions, he has conducted teaching visits to many universities across Europe and Australia. He is a founding member and vice president of the Hellenic Semiotic Society (since 1978), vice president of the Federation of Semiotic Societies of Balkan Countries (since 1997), and a member of the Executive Committee of the International Semiotic Society (from 1980 to the present). He has been actively involved in the field of Interuniversity Cooperation Programs ERASMUS, LINGUA, SOCRATES/ERASMUS (since 1991), aiming to develop Modern Greek Studies in the countries of the European Community.
