
Giannis Sakkas
Giannis Sakkas was born in London in 1965. He is a professor of modern and contemporary Mediterranean history at the Department of Mediterranean Studies at the University of the Aegean and a tutor at the Hellenic Open University. He studied at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and later at the Universities of Lancaster and Hull in the UK. His areas of expertise include a) the 1940s b) Greek foreign policy c) Greece and the Mediterranean d) history of the Arab world e) history of the Cold War. He is proficient in English and Italian.
He has participated in numerous international conferences and has taught through the Erasmus program at the universities of Mannheim (Germany) and Padua (Italy). He is the scientific coordinator of the e-learning program - LIFELONG at the University of the Aegean titled "Greece in the Modern and Contemporary Era." He also serves as an expert evaluator of European programs. He is a member of the Royal Historical Society in the UK.
Since 2015, he has been the director of the Master's program at the Department of Mediterranean Studies titled "Governance, Development, and Security in the Mediterranean."
His scholarly publications include "Britain and the Greek Civil War, 1944-49" (Germany, 2012). His articles have been published in journals such as Hellenic Studies/Etudes Helleniques, Thetis, Journal of the Hellenic Diaspora, Journal of Southern Europe and the Balkans, Balkan Studies, among others. His next book examines the role of the Great Powers in Greece.
In recent years, he has been involved in poetry and exploring the relationship between history and literature.
