Alexis P. Mitropoulos

Alexis P. Mitropoulos was born in Pyrgos, Ilia. He holds degrees from the Athens Law School, the School of Philosophy of Athens, and Panteion University. Since 1980, he has been teaching Labor Law and Social Security Law at the University of Athens. He has a rich history of social activism. From his high school years, he faced persecution for his democratic beliefs. As a student at the Athens Law School during the dictatorship, he was imprisoned for an extended period and tortured by the Security Forces of the dictatorial regime. In May 2010, along with specialized scientists and social leaders, he founded the Union for the Defense of Labor and the Welfare State (ENYPEKK, enypekk.gr). In the Local Elections of November 2010, he led the coalition "Attica Cooperation - No to the Memorandum" for the Attica Region. In the National Elections of May-June 2012 and January 2015, he was elected as the top-voted SYRIZA MP in the Attica Region. He served as the First Vice President of the Parliament until the summer of 2015, when he distanced himself from SYRIZA and did not vote for the third Memorandum. He has published several books and studies.
