Panagiotis V. Roumeliotis

Panagiotis Roumeliotis was born and raised in Suez, Egypt. He is also an Emeritus Professor of International and European Economics at the Department of International and European Studies at Panteion University. He holds a degree from the 6th Department of the University (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales), a doctorate (doctorat 3e cycle) in economic sciences from the Sorbonne University, and a doctorate (doctorat d'Etat) in economic sciences from the University of Paris II. He served as Director of the Institute of International Relations (IDIS) at Panteion University and President of the Institute of Economic Forecasting of the Euro-Mediterranean World (IPEMed - Institut de Perspective Economique du Monde Mediterraneen), as well as a visiting professor at the Sorbonne. From March 2010 to December 2011, he served as Alternate Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund. He has held the positions of Minister of Trade and National Economy. In 1989, he was elected as a Member of the European Parliament, and in 1997, he was appointed as a special representative of the Council of the European Union (EU) in the Stability Process in the Balkans. In 2000, the Council of Europe and the EU Council elected him as President for Democratization and Human Rights in the Balkans. Since January 2012, he has been Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Piraeus Bank (Non-Executive Member), Chairman of the Board's Risk Management Committee, Member of the Strategic Planning Committee, and simultaneously an Economic Advisor to the Management. He has been honored with the following distinctions: He is a Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the French Republic and the Patriarchate of Jerusalem. He has been awarded the medals of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the Republic of Poland, the Holy Cross of the Apostle Mark of the Patriarchate of Alexandria, as well as awards from the French Academy of Commercial Sciences and the Glob Art Innovation of Austria.
