Dimitrios G. Kampouroglou

Dimitrios Kambouroglou (1852-1942). Dimitrios Kambouroglou was born in Athens, the son of Grigorios Kambouroglou, a scholar from Constantinople and founder of the first national theater stage in Greece, and Marianna Soterianou-Gerontos from Athens. He grew up in an intellectually rich environment, as his mother was also highly educated for her time. He studied at the Law School of the University of Athens and practiced law for fifteen years. He later worked in the public sector [Athens Court of First Instance (1872-1873), Archaeological Society, National Library, where he served as director (1904-1917)]. He was also involved in journalism. As part of his activities, he gathered historical and chronological material about Athens, republished the magazine "Evdomas" founded by his father, taking over its management (1884-1886), and published the folklore magazine "Dipylon" (1910-1912). He was honored with the State Prize for Literature (1923) and was a member (from 1927) and president (1934) of the Academy of Athens. In 1932, he celebrated fifty years of literary activity at the Parnassos Literary Society. He died in Athens during the German occupation. He made his literary debut in 1872, while still a student, by submitting his comedy "Conscientiousness and Unconscientiousness" to the Voutsinaio Poetry Competition, where he was awarded the following year for his poetry collection "The Voice of My Heart." Many publications and editions of his works followed, covering various fields of writing. Dimitrios Kambouroglou belongs to the Greek prose writers of the so-called 1880s generation. His work is dominated by his intention to document the history of Athens, for which he had a deep affection, and to highlight through his writing the unbroken continuity of Hellenism through the ages. For this reason, he turned to both the historical and folklore study of the past, mainly the period of Ottoman rule, and the observation of his contemporary reality, with an emphasis on the popular social strata. In terms of language, he adhered to a restrained demotic expression.
