Giannis Papathanasiou

Giannis Papathanasiou was born in Athens in 1954. He studied Electrical and Mechanical Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens. He speaks English, French, and German. From a young age, he was involved in the family business, trading building technology equipment, until 2002, when he chose to focus exclusively on politics, in accordance with the constitutional mandate at the time. From 1988 to 1993, he served as the General Secretary of the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and then from 1993 to 2000, as its President, until he resigned after being elected as a Member of Parliament for the New Democracy party. He was elected as an MP for the B' Athens district in the 2004, 2007, 2009, and May 2012 elections. From April 13, 2004, to September 16, 2007, he served as Deputy Minister of Development, and from September 19, 2007, to January 7, 2009, as Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance. From January 8, 2009, to October 4, 2009, he held the position of Minister of Economy and Finance. From February 27, 2014, to May 4, 2015, he served as Chairman of Hellenic Petroleum. Giannis Papathanasiou has two daughters.
