Nikos Iglesis

Nikos Inglesis is a journalist and a member of the Journalists' Union of the Athens Daily Newspapers (ESIEA). He was born in Athens in 1949. His initial social consciousness was shaped by his father's French culture and his mother's historical narratives about the lost homelands of Pontus and Asia Minor. As a high school student, he became interested in public affairs, participating in demonstrations in Athens in the early 1960s for the Cyprus issue and later for the July events of 1965. He became politically organized in EDIN, the youth wing of the then Center Union. During the Dictatorship of April 21, he moved to France, where he studied Economic Sciences and engaged with the ideological and political movements of the time in the aftermath of May '68. After the fall of the Dictatorship, he joined PASOK, the party of national independence, popular sovereignty, and social liberation, from which he soon distanced himself due to the lack of democratic processes within the Movement. He later reapproached PASOK politically but left permanently when the so-called modernizers under Kostas Simitis dominated the party. He studied at the Professional Journalism Workshop and began working as an editor for Epsilon, a monthly magazine on EEC issues published by the newspaper Eleftherotypia. He later worked as an economic editor for ET-1 television, as the head of economic reporting, and subsequently as the chief editor of the Newsroom. For a period, he served as the Director of the Fourth Program of Greek Radio (ERT). He also served as the head of the Press Office of the Ministry of Finance for a time. He focused particularly on issues of the state budget, fiscal policy, public debt, and tax policy. His articles on the recent economic crisis and the policies of the Memoranda were published in the magazines Epikaira, Crash, and the newspaper Paron tis Kyriakis (see also http://greekattack.wordpress.com).
