
Katerina Nikolaou
Katerina Nikolaou was born in Athens. She holds a degree from the Department of History and Archaeology of the School of Philosophy at the University of Athens and a Ph.D. from the same department. From 1982 to 1987, she collaborated on a research program at the then Chair of Byzantine State History at the University of Athens, while simultaneously teaching at the American College of Agia Paraskevi until 1988. Since 1988, she has been working at the Institute of Byzantine Research of the National Hellenic Research Foundation on the program "Byzantium and the Slavic-Balkan World." Within this framework, she has co-authored, with Theoni Bazaou-Barabas, an analytical bibliography covering the years 1945-1991 on the topic: Greek Territory and Early Slavs-Bulgarians-Serbs (6th-15th centuries), Athens 1992, and has edited conference proceedings. She has published studies on the position and role of women in middle Byzantine society, which is the focus of her research interest. Her independent publications include: "The Position of Women in Byzantine Society," Athens, Goulandris-Horn Foundation, 1993, and "Women in Byzantine Society (8th-11th centuries): Their Image in Hagiographical Texts," Athens, Typed Doctoral Dissertation, 2000.
