Giannis Kourakis

Born in Tylissos, Heraklion, Crete, on October 6, 1955, he is married to Chrysi Mouzouraki and has two children. Before being elected as a Member of Parliament, he worked at the Public Power Corporation (ΔΕΗ). Political and Social Activity: - President of the Heraklion Labor Center from 1987 to 1994. - Member of the Administration of the General Confederation of Greek Workers (ΓΣΕΕ) from 1992 to 1993. - Member of the Prefectural Committee of PASOK in Heraklion. - Municipal Councilor of Heraklion from 1990 to 1994. - Member of Parliament for PASOK from 1993 to 2003. - Mayor of Heraklion, Crete, from 2003. Parliamentary Activity: - Elected as a Member of Parliament for Heraklion with PASOK in the elections of 1993, 1996, and 2000. - As a Member of Parliament, he participated in the Standing Committees on Economic and Social Affairs of the Parliament. - After the 2000 elections, he was elected Chairman of the Standing Committee on Social Affairs of the Parliament. - Participated in various Working Sectors of the Hellenic Parliament. - Rapporteur of numerous bills, mainly on Social Care and Labor issues. Government Work: He served as Deputy Minister of Culture responsible for Sports. His tenure was marked by significant and innovative work: - Drafting the New Sports Law, which was widely accepted. - Initiating major sports projects across the country. - Designing and implementing sports infrastructure throughout Crete. - Organizing and accelerating Olympic preparation. - Modernizing the operation of the General Secretariat of Sports. - Radical reform of mass sports programs.
