Spyros Danellis

Spyros Danellis was born in Heraklion, Crete, in 1955. He studied Architecture and Engineering (1979) at the University of Florence and has worked as a freelancer and consultant since 1986. He is fluent in Italian and has a good command of English. He is married to Nena Galanidou, an associate professor of archaeology at the University of Crete, and they have two daughters, Smaragda and Anastasia. Parliamentary Activities: - 1996-2000: Member of Parliament for Heraklion with the "Coalition of the Left and Progress." He served on the Foreign & Defense and Production & Trade Committees. He was also a member of the Hellenic Parliamentary Delegation to the International Parliamentary Union (I.P.U.). - 2009 - : Member of the European Parliament with PASOK, serving on the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development and the Committee on Transport and Tourism of the European Parliament. Political and Social Activities: - 1975-1977: Member of the Board of the Association of Greek Students in Florence - 1985-1987: Member of the Board of the Association of Architects of Heraklion - 1988-1991: Vice President of the Administrative Committee of the Technical Chamber of Greece/Eastern Crete Section - 1990-1994: Municipal Councilor in the Municipality of Heraklion - 1994-1996: Vice President of the Community of Limenas Chersonisou and first President of the Council of the 9th Territorial District of Heraklion - 2000-2002: Vice President of the Board of Directors of the "Group for the Modernization of Society" (OPEK) - 2003-2009: Mayor of Chersonisos - 2003-2006: Vice President of the Local Union of Municipalities and Communities of Heraklion He was also a founding member and a member of the Central Committees of the parties "Socialist Course" (1976-1978), "Greek Left" (EAR, 1978-1988), and was a founding member of the unified "Coalition of the Left" (1989). He was a member (1992-2000) of the Central Committee of the "Coalition of the Left and Progress."
